James Wan, de maker van onder andere Insidious en The Conjuring, heeft met zijn horrorfilms een grote invloed gehad op het genre, met name de bovennatuurlijke tak. Er is zelfs een klein detail dat hij populair heeft gemaakt: een iconisch moment waarin de titel in beeld komt, het gebeurt inmiddels aan de lopende band. Onlangs bracht Smile de naam van de film uiterst bizar in beeld. Ook Evil Dead Rise presenteert die op een epische wijze. Als je van start gaat op de top van de berg moet je veel moeite doen om daar te blijven.
Roadie Beth ontdekt dat ze zwanger is, en zoekt haar zus Ellie op voor steun. De familieband blijkt echter niet zo sterk als gedacht, want Beth wist niet dat Ellie en haar drie kinderen hun appartement moeten verlaten omdat het gebouw gesloopt wordt en dat haar man ervandoor is gegaan. De kinderen vinden een verstopte kluis met daarin een onheilspellend boek en wat platen. Op die plaat staat een duivels gebed dat de bekende Evil Dead-demonen oproept, en Ellie is hun eerste slachtoffer. Beth zal haar moederschap eerder moeten ontpoppen dan gedacht.
De trailer belooft een gore-festijn. Dat blijkt een teleurstelling (of opluchting als je niet graag naar bloederige marteling kijkt), want de heftigste verminkingen heb je al gezien in de promotie. Deze toon werd al gezet in de vorige Evil Dead, en ergens is dat in de stijl van het origineel. Ook daarin werden liters nepbloed gebruikt en ledematen afgehakt. Vanwege het lagere budget en technische beperkingen viel het nog mee, maar aanwezig was het wel.
De setting verplaatsen van een hutje in het bos naar een woning in een bijna verlaten en half functionerend pand is een effectieve aanpassing. Ellies zoon is dj en dat is een passende verklaring voor het feit dat hij het later niet kan weerstaan om dat dubieuze vinyl op zijn draaitafel te leggen. Dat die platen en het bekende boek al bijna een eeuw in een kluis zitten, gooit de canon overboord. Er is natuurlijk maar één Necronomicon, dus alles uit eerdere Evil Dead-films is nooit gebeurd. Apart.
Behalve het filmtitelmoment is ook het oproepen van de demonen fenomenaal, met name dankzij de geluidsafdeling die helemaal los kan gaan met audio-effecten. Volgens traditie krijgt degene die als eerste bezeten wordt het 't zwaarst te verduren, en dat is ook hier weer het geval. Moeder Ellie krijgt er in een lift flink van langs van een onzichtbare kracht. Een metafoor voor de klap die eindelijk aankomt nadat haar partner haar en de kinderen gedumpt heeft, ze op het punt staat dakloos te worden en dan ook nog eens een hulpbehoevende zus aan de deur heeft.
Daarna gaat het over een moeder die niet meer geschikt is om voor haar kinderen of zichzelf te zorgen, en een zwangere vrouw die bang is dat ze geen goede ouder zal zijn die gedwongen wordt om kinderen te beschermen. Beter dat dan geen onderliggend thema, maar erg diep wordt niet gegraven. Vanaf het moment dat Ellie bezeten is, bewandelt het plot dezelfde weg als eerdere delen: de eerste bezetene infecteert steeds meer anderen terwijl een krimpend groepje moet zien te overleven.
Het is eng vanaf het begin tot kort nadat Ellie zichzelf niet meer is. Zenuwslopende en tergend trage opbouw naar schrikmomenten, het mysterie van hoe en wanneer het allemaal mis zal gaan. Maar zodra dat gebeurt, is het niet zozeer angstaanjagend maar eerder spannend. Je gunt het Beth en de kinderen om te ontsnappen, en het is geloofwaardig dat dit een opgave is. Behalve wanneer de demon de jongste dochter overtuigt om het slot van de deur te halen. Typisch ergerlijk horrorgedrag.
Evil Dead Rise is niet gemaakt met de intentie om hem in de bioscoop te laten draaien, maar direct naar een van de streamingsdiensten. Omdat het testpubliek zo enthousiast was besloot de studio hem toch maar op het grote doek te vertonen. Beide opties zijn begrijpelijk: een goede maar geen fantastische film die kundig genoeg is gemaakt om indrukwekkend te zijn op meer dan een televisiescherm. Waar het woord Rise voor staat is niet helemaal helder, dit is geen oorsprongsverhaal zoals bij Planet of the Apes. Het is hoe dan ook een aardig deel in de reeks.
