Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), private, nonprofit American corporation whose members are the public television stations of the United States and its unincorporated territories.

Stations rely on generous donations from viewers like you, corporate sponsorships, and foundation grants to cover the rest of their operating budget. Part of each station's operating budget is programming dues which it pays to PBS (and NPR) for National programming like PBS News Hour.

“PBS SoCal and KCET merged in 2018, and since then, we have grown into a strong public media entity serving Southern California that reflects the diversity of our region and provides a full schedule of beloved and trusted PBS programs,” PBS SoCal president and CEO Andrew Russell said in a statement.

PBS introduced its first iconographic logo in 1971, a multi-colored wordmark of the network's initials with the P designed to resemble a silhouette of a human face. The logo was designed by Ernie Smith and Herb Lubalin of the Lubalin Smith Carnase design firm.

Public broadcasting stations are funded by a combination of private donations from listeners and viewers, foundations and corporations. Funding for public television comes in roughly equal parts from government (at all levels) and the private sector.

NPR receives a small number of competitive grants from CPB and federal agencies like the Department of Education and the Department of Commerce. This funding amounts to less than 1% of revenues.

In 1967, Congress passed the Public Broadcasting Act, which formed the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). CPB is an independent, private nonprofit organization which receives most of its funding from the federal government.
