- The distance between your fireplace and TV. A gas fireplace would need more distance separation than an electric fireplace. With gas/wood burning fireplaces, have 12-20 inches distance from the TV. Electric fireplaces are safer and generate less heat; so you can have a short distance of 8 inches between them.
- Use insulating material around the TV (inside the wall bump-out) to further reduce the chances of damage.
- Installing a mantel between your TV screen and the firebox adds an extra layer of protection

Short answer, yes! You can place a TV next to a fireplace but you will have to be extra careful of the interior design. A wrong interior style will completely ruin your living room and look extremely disorderly and messy.
You can place A TV next to a fireplace if you have a bigger and longer living room. A smaller living room would look suffocated and congested if you are not careful.
- When adding a TV next to a fireplace in a small living, ensure the wall you are choosing is clutter-free and austere.

I would say avoid small-sized TVs. It doesn’t matter whether your living room is big or small; the TV should be big. It wouldn’t suffocate your living room in any way! However, you must choose your fireplace’s size more carefully.
Too big and broad fireplace would look awfully suffocating in a small living room. The best choice is choosing long and narrow fireplaces; they don’t go against a small space! In fact, they add affluency and sophistication to your room.
Similarly, don’t use too heavy mantel (wide) if you have a small living room; they will consume too much space. Instead, go for sleeker and thinner mantel whether for your TV or your fireplace.
6. Is watching TV above fireplace too high?
The right position is crucial to avoid straining your neck or posture. If you place your TV too high and close to the ceiling; you are bound to hurt yourself and your posture along the way. It’s also why all my suggestions have a low placement for the TV unit.
So, please position your TV at eye level or 15 degrees above or below. Your sofa placement is crucial, too! If your TV is 75 inches long, place the sofa at least 150 inches away from the TV.
7. How do I protect my TV from fireplace heat?
Here’s how you can protect your TV from fireplace heat:
- Keep visible distance between your TV and fireplace (8-20 inches)
- Add a mantel between your fireplace and TV.
- Use a fireplace hood when both the devices are in use.
- Choose an enclosed fireplace.
- It’s even better if you choose an electric fireplace. Many electric fireplaces come with realistic flame visuals to provide you an authentic experience.
- Insulate the wall bump-out properly.
- Consult a professional!
8. Where’s the best place to put the fireplace?
Placing your fireplace at the center of your adjoining living room and dining space is a sweet choice (Refer to our first recommendation). You can add a transparent fireplace frame to the lengths of the divider wall and create a beautiful illusion of fire on both sides.
On the wall, the fireplace looks best when it’s closer to the floor or 50-60 inches above the floor!
